2016 Tanglewood schedule highlights

May 4, 2016 by Dave Read

  • May 11, 2016 Article by Dave Read

The 2016 Tanglewood schedule, running from June 25-September 3, is highlighted by Boston Symphony Orchestra programs featuring performances in the Koussevitsky Music Shed by Andris Nelsons, Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Yefim Bronfman, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Renée Fleming, Paul Lewis, Yo-Yo Ma, Kristine Opolais, Dawn Upshaw, and Yuja Wang. There will be Boston Pops concerts, including one with guest artist Seth MacFarlane, with Keith Lockhart conducting, and the ever popular John Williams’ Film Night. Perhaps the newest news related to Tanglewood is that concerts of Fridays and Saturdays evenings, as well as Tanglewood On Parade, will begin at 8PM, instead of 8:30!

A Prairie Home Companion at Tanglewood 2016

Garrison Keillor and Andra Suchy at Tanglewood, June 26, 2010
The June 25, 2016 live broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, with Garrison Keillor, is bound to be one of the most popular events in Tanglewood history, because it will mark the end of Keillor’s tenure hosting the program that he created in 1974. Chris Thile, who has been guest hosting for some time, becomes host for the 2016-17 season. Since 2000, the program has been a Tanglewood staple; as Keillor told the audience during the 2000 show, Tanlewood is where he and his wife had their second date. We’ve attended all but one of the sixteen local episodes of the show, skipping only 2007 version to catch the Bob Dylan Show at Bethel Woods. See related articles here: A Prairie Home Companion at Tanglewood.

2016 Ozawa Hall concert

The 2016 schedule of Ozawa Hall concerts includes performances by Jordi Savall, the Chick Corea Trio, Chanticleer, and the Emerson String Quartet. The 2016 Tanglewood season will also feature the BSO’s summer music academy, Tanglewood Music Center in orchestra, chamber music, and recital performances throughout the summer. Other Tanglewood highlights include a semi-staged performance of Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins and the U.S. premiere of George Benjamin’s Dream of the Song, part of the 2016 Festival of Contemporary Music, scheduled to run July 21-25, under the direction of Pulitzer prize-winning American composer Steven Stucky. A full schedule of Popular Artist concerts, including performances to take place on July 3 and 4, among other dates, will be announced in the New Year.

Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble

Also on the 2016 Tanglewood schedule are the the Tanglewood Brass Spectacular! with members of the Boston Pops Brass and Percussion sections joined by the Boston Crusaders, Phantom Regiment, Blue Coats, and Cadets on July 6; two performances by Yo Yo Ma – first with the Silk Road Ensemble on Aug. 8 and then with the BSO on Aug. 27. Another popular radio show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, stages a program for later broadcast on Sept. 1. Here’s an article, photos, and video from last year’s Tanglewood Brass Spectacular!.

The Silk Road Ensemble, which was founded by Yo Yo Ma and others at Tanglewood, last appeared here in 2012, in a performance filmed by PBS: Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble at Tanglewood. The next in a series of classic movies screened with live orchestral accompaniment will be ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ with Orchestra on Aug. 26; John Williams’ score performed live by the Boston Pops.

Tanglewood law audience Tony Bennett Lady Gaga concert, June 30, 2015; photo:Dave ReadThe Pop, rock, jazz schedule Tanglewood 2016, also known as the Popular Artist Series, is as noteworthy and diverse as any in the venue’s long history. This year’s lineup includes many noteworthy shows. Brian Wilson, co-founder and genius composer of the Beach Boys, among the first rock bands to play Tanglewood, returns for a perofrmance of Pet Sounds June 19. A day earlier, Earth, Wind & Fire make their 2nd appearance; jazz great Chichk Corea returns for a Juky 31 concert in Ozawa Hall along with Christian McBride and Brian Blade; the earnest troubadour Jackson Browne, who set an attendance record here in the early 70s rturns June 21. Local favorite and current attendance record-setter James Taylor plays shows July 3 & 4, and, for the 17th year in a row, Garrison Keillor will return to host a live broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion on June 25. Since Keillor has announced his resignation as host following this season, this promises to be an especially memorable show, if not his final Tanglewood appearance.

Getting around the Tanglewood campus

The Tanglewood campus, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Music Center comprises several hundred acres in the towns of Lenox and Stockbridge. It is the location of the Koussevitsky Music Shed and Ozawa Hall, where hundreds of thousands attend concerts and a variety of events, including picnics. We always advise new visitors to arrive early and take their daily walking exercise wandering the beautiful Tanglewood grounds.

Epic rock concerts at Tanglewood

Epic rock concerts at Tanglewood

While Tanglewood, established in the 1930s by Boston Symphony Orchestra music director Serge Koussevitsky, is first and foremost about classical music, in performance, education, and training, since 1968, it also has hosted folk, jazz, rock, and pop concerts. Established during Erich Leinsdorf’s tenure as a way of broadening the Tanglewood audience, the initial performers – Judy Collins, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Ravi Shanka, and The Association were followed the next year by Janis Joplin, Iron Butterfly and the start of two years of productions by legendary promoter Bill Graham, dubbed The Fillmore at Tanglewood. Triple bills such as The Who, Jefferson Airplane and B.B. King gave Tanglewood status beyond the blue-stockin longhair set, but so aroused the neighbors that something had to be done.

And so no shows were held in 1972 and from 1973 on, bookings were limited to acts and artists that unlikely to attract a rowdy crowd. Among the effects of several lawsuits were in-concert decibel monitoring. Outright bans followed for some periods, and related controversies continued into the new century, when a hard limit of 18,500 was put on ticket sales in the wake of a James Taylor appearance with the Boston Pops in 2002 that drew 24,470 patrons.

July 2016 Tanglewood schedule exemplifies all that makes the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer home in the Berkshires one of the world’s most popular and most impotant music venues. On the pop side of the ledger, local resident James Taylor returns with his All Star Band for another 4th of July concert 9and one the day before!), whereas the classical column lists appearances by such luminaries as Joshua Bell, Renee Fleming, Pinchas Zukerman, Emerson String Quartet, and BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons. Jazz fans welcome return engagements with Chick Corea and Christian McBride.
