The 2016 Tanglewood schedule, running from June 25-September 3, is highlighted by Boston Symphony Orchestra programs featuring performances in the Koussevitsky Music Shed by Andris Nelsons, Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Yefim Bronfman, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Renée Fleming, Paul Lewis, Yo-Yo Ma, Kristine Opolais, Dawn Upshaw, and Yuja Wang. There will be Boston Pops concerts, including one with guest artist Seth MacFarlane, with Keith Lockhart conducting, and the ever popular John Williams’ Film Night. Perhaps the newest news related to Tanglewood is that concerts of Fridays and Saturdays evenings, as well as Tanglewood On Parade, will begin at 8PM, instead of 8:30!
A Prairie Home Companion at Tanglewood 2016
The June 25, 2016 live broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, with Garrison Keillor, is bound to be one of the most popular events in Tanglewood history, because it will mark the end of Keillor’s tenure hosting the program that he created in 1974. Chris Thile, who has been guest hosting for some time, becomes host for the 2016-17 season. Since 2000, the program has been a Tanglewood staple; as Keillor told the audience during the 2000 show, Tanlewood is where he and his wife had their second date. We’ve attended all but one of the sixteen local episodes of the show, skipping only 2007 version to catch the Bob Dylan Show at Bethel Woods. 2016 Ozawa Hall concert
The 2016 schedule of Ozawa Hall concerts includes performances by Jordi Savall, the Chick Corea Trio, Chanticleer, and the Emerson String Quartet. The 2016 Tanglewood season will also feature the BSO’s summer music academy, Tanglewood Music Center in orchestra, chamber music, and recital performances throughout the summer. Other Tanglewood highlights include a semi-staged performance of Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins and the U.S. premiere of George Benjamin’s Dream of the Song, part of the 2016 Festival of Contemporary Music, scheduled to run July 21-25, under the direction of Pulitzer prize-winning American composer Steven Stucky. A full schedule of Popular Artist concerts, including performances to take place on July 3 and 4, among other dates, will be announced in the New Year.
Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble
Also on the 2016 Tanglewood schedule are the the Tanglewood Brass Spectacular! with members of the Boston Pops Brass and Percussion sections joined by the Boston Crusaders, Phantom Regiment, Blue Coats, and Cadets on July 6; two performances by Yo Yo Ma – first with the Silk Road Ensemble on Aug. 8 and then with the BSO on Aug. 27. Another popular radio show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, stages a program for later broadcast on Sept. 1. Here’s an article, photos, and video from last year’s Tanglewood Brass Spectacular!.
The Silk Road Ensemble, which was founded by Yo Yo Ma and others at Tanglewood, last appeared here in 2012, in a performance filmed by PBS: Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble at Tanglewood. The next in a series of classic movies screened with live orchestral accompaniment will be ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ with Orchestra on Aug. 26; John Williams’ score performed live by the Boston Pops.
