The rural, residential community of Williamstown is the home of Williams College, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, each the pre-eminent institution in its class. It's no surprise that Williamstown was ranked 18th in the book The 100 Best Small Towns in America, by Norman Crampton.
The featured exhibition scheduled at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA from Oct. 11, 2009 through January 3, 2010 is Steps off the Beaten Path: Nineteenth-Century Photographs of Rome and its Environs. Showing 100 photographs taken between 1850 and 1880, the exhibition encourages a walking tour through Rome with recognizable sites among the out-of-the-way scenes nineteenth-century Romans and Europeans encountered in their daily lives.
