Cast of Othello at Shakespeare and Co.

From Frances Benn Hall's review: "The current Othello now playing in repertory on the Founder's stage at Shakespeare and Co. in Lenox, MA, through August 31 is the best production of tragedy that I have ever seen there."

Review of A Man For All Seasons at Berkshire Theatre Festival

A Man for All Seasons

In his role of Sir Thomas More in Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons, now playing at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, Eric Hill once again gives a subtly nuanced performance of a man of singular learning (and piety), self-true, with a personality defined by his conscience, stoic and brave, but affable, gentle, and loving.

Review of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet at Jacob's Pillow

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet is unique in a few important ways. First, it bases itself in two small to midsize cities, bringing significant and enriching dance to them. Second, it does not regularly perform the choreography of either the founder or the current artistic director of the company. This lack of self-serving performance is too little in evidence among contemporary dance companies. Here's hoping that others will take Aspen Santa Fe Ballet's lead.

Review of Private Lives at Barrington Stage Co.

Frances Benn Hall writes in her review of the revival of Noel Coward's play Private Lives at Barrington Stage Co. in Pittsfield, MA, "...the play is a sheer delight from the moment the lights go off to rise on two identical balconies of a posh hotel on the French Riviera in 1930."

Reviews of four Tanglewood performances during July, 2008.

We attended four concerts at Tanglewood during July: one illustrated the aphorism "vita brevis, ars longa;" another reminded us that the Tanglewood Festival Chorus are the world's poorest paid pros; the third showed that the baton works equally well on the distaff side; and finally we saw that nature can impose a felicitous collaboration upon art, even while being otherwise mischevious.

Review of A Flea In Her Ear at Williamstown Theatre Festival

Turn David Ives loose on translating Georges Feydeau's A Flea in Her Ear and you have one of the most hilarious, zany, and rapid paced farces to ever grace the Williamstown Theatre Festival stage.

Review of The Three Sisters at Williamstown Theatre Festival

Anton Chekhov is undeniably unique and the four masterpieces (five if one includes Ivanov) he composed during his brief life have inspired the course of contemporary theatre for more than a century.

Review of The Book Club Play at the Berkshire Theatre Festival

If the bland title of playwright Karen Zacarias' The Book Club Play now gracing the Berkshire Theatre Festival stage leads one to expect a predictable comedy concerning the motley types who inhabit the ubiquitous book clubs that seem to exist everywhere, think again. Review of Noel Coward in Two Keys at Berkshire Theatre Festival

Cast of Noel Coward in Two Keys at Berkshire Theatre Festival

In her review of "Noel Coward in Two Keys" at Berkshire Theatre Festival, Frances Benn Hall writes, "Just as his own songs have ornamented his plays, so do the two titles of these two swan song-plays seem to me to be Coward having his last fun with words, scoffing at prudery and coming out with just a song at twilight."

Review of Waiting For Godot at Berkshire Theatre Festival

Waiting For Godot at Berkshire Theatre Festival

Looking back on theatre history of the 20th century, it is apparent that one play has generated more speculation, interpretation, and ambiguity ... The play of course is Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.

Review of Ballet Boyz at Jacob's Pillow

Ballet Boyz was my first Jacob's Pillow experience of the 2008 season. I arrived innocent and curious and eager to be a part of the contemporary and witty and challenging dance evening. I was not disappointed. The Ballet Boyz, and girl, were magnificent and exciting and refreshing. Read the full Review of Ballet Boyz at Jacob's Pillow.
