Tanglewood schedule 2010

James Levine, Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra The 2010 Tanglewood schedule spans ten weeks, from the June 26, 2010 broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, with Garrison Keillor, in the Koussevitsky Music Shed, (our review, with video clips, of 2009 broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion with guests Arlo Guthrie and Steve Martin) to the closing concert of the Tanglewood Jazz Festival in Seiji Ozawa Hall on Sept. 5, 2010. In between are the 8 weeks of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood season, under the leadership of BSO Music Director James Levine. Tanglewood map and ticket information.

Maestro Levine’s sixth Tanglewood season has him scheduled to conduct eight programs in addition to leading the group of conductors that will assemble for Tanglewood on Parade, Aug. 3, which this year celebrates Boston Pops laureate conductor and composer John Williams‘ 30th Tanglewood anniversary.

Tanglewood opening night – Mahler’s Symphony No. 2

The July 9 Tanglewood opening program is Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, featuring soprano Layla Claire, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Maestro Levine is scheduled to conduct two more Mahler programs, Symphony No. 3, on July 17, with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, featuring mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill, the Women of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and the American Boychoir; and the Symphony No. 4 with the BSO, on July 31.

Opera’s presence on the Tanglewood schedule is marked by the July 23, 2010 BSO concert performance of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, and fully-staged Tanglewood Music Center performances of Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos on August 1 and 4, 2010.

Tanglewood’s popular artists – Boston Pops, James Taylor, Arlo Guthrie, Mark Morris

James Taylor scheduled to perform, with Carole King at Tanglewood, July 3 and 4, 2010.Other highlights on the 2010 Tanglewood schedule are a performance by the Mark Morris Dance Group on June 27 and 28 in Seiji Ozawa Hall; two performances in the Shed by James Taylor and Carole King, July 3 and 4, 2010 (our review of James Taylor’s 60th birthday party at Tanglewood, including special guest Carole King); three Boston Pops concerts, in celebration of its 125th anniversary, July 2, July 18, with the Berkshires own Arlo Guthrie, and Film Night at Tanglewood, with John Williams, August 14.

Seiji Ozawa returns for Tanglewood Music Center’s 70th anniversary

The 70th anniversary of the Tanglewood Music Center will be commemorated several ways throughout the season, especially with performances throughout the season by TMC alumni, none more illustrious than Seiji Ozawa, who will return to conduct the BSO on July 24 and the TMC on July 25.

The 10th anniversary of Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble will be celebrated with a concert on Aug. 8.

2010 Ozawa Hall schedule

The 2010 Ozawa Hall schedule includes performances June 27 and 28 by the Mark Morris Dance Group, with live music played by Tanglewood Music Center Fellows; Benjamin Bagby performs Beowulf: The Epic in Performance, accompanying himself on a six-stringed harp, July 21; cellist Pieter Wispelwey plays J. S. Bach’s Complete Suites for solo cello, July 22; Audra McDonald makes her Ozawa Hall debut in “A New American Songbook,” July 18; Pierre-Laurent Aimard returns to Tanglewood with members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe performing music that ranges from Bach to Carter, August 10; Cellist Steven Isserlis joins the Australian Chamber Orchestra under violinist/leader Richard Tognetti for Schumann’s Cello Concerto, August 18; Pianist Garrick Ohlsson offers two all-Chopin programs, August 24 and 26; Bernarda Fink makes her Tanglewood recital debut with pianist Anthony Spiri, August 5; the Paris-based Ébène String Quartet makes its Tanglewood debut, August 19; Emerson String Quartet, with guest clarinetist David Shifrin, July 6; Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, July 15, and The Boston Symphony Chamber Players’ annual Tanglewood concert includes music of Mozart, Brahms, Villa-Lobos, and Gandolfi on July 14.

Tanglewood Festival Chorus, John Oliver, conductor, 40th anniversary

The Tanglewood Festival Chorus, John Oliver, conductor, is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2010. On Opening Night at Tanglewood, the Chorus will mark its anniversary with a Prelude Concert in Seiji Ozawa Hall before joining the BSO in the Shed for Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, July 9. The TFC will also be heard with the BSO in Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Mozart’s Requiem with James Levine conducting, July 16, Poulenc’s Gloria conducted by David Zinman, August 27, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 conducted by Kurt Masur, August 29. In addition, the Women of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus will join the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra conducted by James Levine for Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, July 17.

Originally formed in 1970 by founding conductor John Oliver for performances at Tanglewood, and made up of members who donate their services, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus is now the official chorus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra year-round, performing in Boston, New York, and at Tanglewood. The chorus has performed with the BSO in Europe under James Levine and Bernard Haitink and in the Far East under Seiji Ozawa. It is featured on Boston Symphony recordings led by Levine, Haitink, and Ozawa, and on Boston Pops CDs led by Keith Lockhart and John Williams.

Grand finale – Beethoven’s Ninth

The 2010 Tanglewood schedule closes August 29 with the traditional season-ending performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, conducted by Kurt Masur, with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, soprano Nicole Cabell, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, tenor Marcus Haddock, and bass-baritone John Relyea.

Tanglewood tickets go on sale to the general public Sunday, February 14, 2010. Tickets will be available online, and through SymphonyCharge at 888-266-1200. Regular season ticket prices at Tanglewood range from $9-$115. Tickets for Open Rehearsals are $17.

Tickets will also available for purchase in person at the Tanglewood Box Office at Tanglewood’s Main Gate on West Street in Lenox, MA, starting June 18.
